“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!”
Psalms 100:1-2

In the mid-1990s, a new gospel music label was created to bring to light the voices of a new generation of musicians — Black Smoke Music Worldwide. In the decades since, previously unknown gospel artists have achieved national recognition, including Grammy nominees and Billboard number-one acts like James Fortune, crooner Earnest Pugh, Evelyn Turrentine-Agee, Pastor Mike, Jr., and Zacardi Cortez. All of these artists, and dozens more, have blessed listeners around the world from a platform that was the brainchild of a former R&B promoter and car salesman — Kerry Douglas.

Soulful Starmaker Kerry Douglas

Following a near-death experience that led to his conversion to Christianity, Kerry Douglas decided to use his sales and marketing skills to build the careers of Houston-based gospel artists by founding Black Smoke Music Worldwide. Combined with a print publication called “The Gospel Truth” that served as a launching point for the careers of several gospel artists and a series of Gospel music mix albums, artists like James Fortune, Tamela Mann, and Le’Andria Johnson are household names. Fast-forward to 2020, when the world of music was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and music careers were put on hold — Kerry had an idea. Gospel artists could continue to promote and perform in an online venue — they just needed a home. And just like that, Gospel Mix Radio and Spotlight Night with Kerry Douglas were born.

Spotlighting New Voices in Gospel Music

Psalm 96 opens with the beautiful lines from the psalmist “Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.” Gospel Mix Radio loves taking this verse and running with it, highlighting new gospel artists whose songs help spread the glory of the Kingdom of God. We love being able to provide new artists with a platform for their music, and we hope that you’ll join us every day on this journey.
